When Sherlock walks into the Biology classroom, a few minutes early as usual, he is thinking about last night. It's a bad time for it, but he is hardly going to start thinking about Biology until it is absolutely necessary.

He takes his usual seat and settles in to await Miss—to await Bella.

"If you were Tony," Cal points out, "you would agree with me."

"I don't think even Tony could have managed to come away with that impression from a conversation like that. On the other hand, Tony would likely have spoken with her about something else in the first place."

"Well, yeah," Cal says in response to the second point.

Most guys do when it involves a hot girl who's interested in them.

He shrugs.

Normally, Cal would probably keep right on poking. On general principle.

Under the circumstances, though, he relents a little, smiling ruefully.

"That's okay," he says, "it's not your fault you suck at this."

"How comforting," he says dryly, but he smiles right back.

"That's what I'm here for," Cal says. "Remember (http://americas-son.livejournal.com/8454.html?thread=1250822#t1250822)?"

"Ah, yes."

And now he's grinning outright.

"Well, if you must."

"I must," Cal confirms. "Don't worry, I'm pretty good at it."

And kind of looking forward to it. Sherlock is his best friend and all, but sometimes Cal misses having, like. Normal conversations.

Not a lot. But sometimes.

"So I have heard. Well, when there is material for any kind of a conversation along those lines, I shall let you know directly. In the meantime, you will have to content yourself with the available facts, which are that Bella Swan is an extremely thorough and persistent young lady and I have no indication that she views me as anything other than an irritatingly difficult puzzle with an irritatingly unlikely solution in a comparatively inoffensive package."

"Yeah," Cal says. "So far as you can tell."

They may finally have found a subject in which Cal strongly suspects Sherlock's deductive abilities to be lacking.

"And what are your thoughts on the matter?" he inquires, half teasing, half with genuine interest.

"She also thinks you're hot."

Obviously.

One word:

"Evidence?"

"She keeps ending up here."

Cal has heard of people of the opposite sex just hanging out with no sexual attraction occurring, but he doesn't really buy it. Especially not teenagers.

"Do we need to have another conversation about things I did not invent?"

Cal looks blank for a couple of seconds, then rolls his eyes.

"There's only like a one in ten chance of that."

"Which hardly even qualifies as improbable," Sherlock says stubbornly.

"It's still pretty unlikely."

Cal is also stubborn.

"Do you have any other indication that you are correct?"

"It's okay if I know more about something than you do," Cal assures him.

"Am I so wrong in wanting to learn?"

"You're just looking for more ways to tell me I'm wrong," Cal says, cheerfully enough.

"Only because I believe you are in fact wrong. If I find out otherwise, I promise I will admit it."

"Good," Cal says decisively. "Because you will."

Just in case Sherlock hadn't figured out his stance on that subject yet.
